The Parliamentary Committee on Trade and Industry, chaired by Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, concluded its oversight activities in the Western Area and the provinces of Sierra Leone on Friday, June 21, 2024.
During the visits, the Committee assessed compliance with parliamentary agreements and evaluated the achievements and economic contributions of various entities. Key companies visited included petroleum marketing firms such as National Petroleum (NP), Aminata and Sons, and Eco Energy. Hon. Sesay emphasized that their aim was to ensure these companies adhere to regulations regarding the importation, distribution, transportation, and retailing of petroleum products in a fair and competitive manner.
At Bread Avenue, Wellington, the Committee learned about Sonoco, a leading Guinean company involved in flour milling and other businesses. Sonoco is constructing a flour mill at Cline Town, expected to create over 600 jobs and supply four countries. Bread Avenue, under Sonoco’s purview, is expanding its high-quality bread production to West and Central Freetown.
At Miro Forestry and Timber Products in Mile 91, the Committee observed the company’s progress in plywood production and utility pole manufacturing after years of tree planting. The company is now producing international-standard plywood and high-quality utility poles.
