The Judiciary of Sierra Leone, in partnership with the Judicial and Legal Training Institute (JLTI) and supported by UNICEF, has launched a three-day intensive training program for Magistrates, focused on improving their capacity to handle juvenile cases. Held at Lia Hotel in Lungi, Port Loko District, this initiative reflects the Judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that cases involving children are treated with special care and attention.

The training, aimed at equipping judicial officers with the necessary skills to tackle the complexities of juvenile cases, emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development. Hon. Justice Reginald Fynn (JA), Deputy Chairman of JLTI, stressed that children require a distinct approach in both sentencing and rehabilitation, highlighting the unique challenges of juvenile justice.

Magistrates will cover topics such as sentencing guidelines, child-centered legal frameworks, and effective courtroom management in juvenile cases. The training aims to create a judicial environment that acknowledges the special needs of children and responds accordingly.

UNICEF’s involvement underscores their dedication to advancing child justice in Sierra Leone. Hon. Justice Monfred Sesay (JA), Vice President of the Court of Appeal, praised UNICEF’s efforts in promoting children’s rights within the judicial system and emphasized the Judiciary’s commitment to child-centered justice.

The workshop will address key issues like diversion programs, alternatives to detention, cross-examination of child witnesses, and the integration of social services in juvenile cases. With over 28 Magistrates participating, this initiative is expected to significantly impact the handling of juvenile cases across the country.

The program also aligns with broader efforts to expand the Sexual Offences Court, reinforcing the Judiciary’s role in safeguarding children’s rights and promoting a more just society.
