A delegation from the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC) recently met with Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, to discuss advancing additional investment in the private sector.

During the meeting, United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan Hunt, emphasized the delegation’s focus on economic development, a priority for President Bio. Hunt announced plans for the groundbreaking launch of Sierra Leone’s first gas power generation plant and highlighted ongoing renewable energy projects. He mentioned the need to identify smallholder private sector partners for these initiatives.

DFC’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Nisha Biswal, inquired about President Bio’s priorities and expressed DFC’s commitment to partnering with the government and private sector to enhance investment. She noted the critical need for support in agriculture, infrastructure, and digital architecture to attract national and global markets for Sierra Leone’s agricultural products. Biswal emphasized the potential for DFC’s investment to grow and the importance of creating a regulatory framework to attract world-class investments, particularly in Sierra Leone’s mineral resources.

President Julius Maada Bio welcomed the delegation, stressing his priority on food security and identifying agriculture as a key development pillar. He highlighted Sierra Leone’s favorable conditions for agriculture, including good soil and abundant rainfall, and the necessity of reliable and affordable energy to support agribusiness and processing. He discussed the identification of agriculturally viable zones to bolster food security and the need for infrastructure, such as energy, roads, and bridges, to support food production.

President Bio also mentioned that while education was a priority in his first term, significant investments were made in the health sector with partner support. He assured the delegation of his government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investments, referencing the recent Tech Summit where Starlink announced its presence in Sierra Leone to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure.
