In previous elections, such as in 2012, President Bio (then the opposition candidate) took his case to the Supreme Court after losing to Ernest Koroma. However, the case was dismissed due to procedural technicalities, highlighting flaws in the electoral process.
Key Reforms Expected from the Tripartite Committee
- Filing Period for Petitions: The Public Elections Act previously allowed only a short period for filing election petitions (7 working days in 2012 and 14 in 2018). This will be extended to ensure adequate time for legal challenges.
- Fixed Election Dates: The current law allows the sitting president to determine election dates and extend their tenure, as was the case when former President Ernest Bai Koroma extended his term by a year. The committee will recommend fixed election dates every five years to prevent such extensions.
- Election Integrity: The committee aims to close loopholes and ensure that elections are conducted fairly, transparently, and without manipulation of dates.
