Sierra Leone faces a looming fuel crisis as supply shortages hit multiple gas stations. Reports emerging suggest that Sierra Leone is teetering on the edge of another fuel crisis, as only one petrol company reportedly maintains a steady fuel stock. Checks conducted by Slik TV on Friday reveal widespread closures of filling stations across Freetown and other districts, resulting in lengthy queues at the limited outlets still dispensing petrol (PMS).
This scarcity has triggered a surge in transportation fares in certain areas, as opportunistic drivers take advantage of the situation. Investigations indicate a shortfall in PMS supply to various fuel companies, compelling them to cease operations at their stations. Presently, NP Sierra Leone (NP-SL) stands out as the sole company with readily available fuel, operating all its stations nationwide.
The conspicuous absence of participation from other major fuel companies amidst this shortage has left many Sierra Leoneans perplexed. The public is urging the Petroleum Regulatory Agency and the government to probe into the root cause of the supply constraints and implement remedial measures. This potential fuel crisis adds to the ongoing energy woes in the country. Just last week, Kanja Sesay, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy, resigned following persistent power outages. The government has since placed the Ministry under direct supervision by President Julius Maada Bio, assisted by two additional officials.
Relying solely on one company for fuel supply has sparked concerns about the stability and effectiveness of Sierra Leone’s fuel distribution system.
