At least seven members of a Nigerian Government Protection Agency are missing after Boko Haram insurgents ambushed their convoy in Shiroro, Niger State. The convoy, consisting of 80 security personnel protecting the power network, was attacked on Monday by about 200 fighters.
Babawale Afolabi, a spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, confirmed that 50 insurgents were killed in the clash. Boko Haram, known for sabotaging power supplies, has previously caused power outages in northern Nigeria.
Although primarily based in the northeast, the group has extended its operations into Niger State. The insurgency, which began in 2009, has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and millions of displacements, spreading across Nigeria’s northern neighbors.
