In a major corruption scandal gripping Russia, Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov has been accused of accepting a bribe, marking the country’s most prominent corruption case since President Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine invasion. Ivanov, alleged to have received a bribe worth 1 million rubles (over $10,800), appeared in a Moscow court clad in military attire, facing accusations of involvement in an organized bribery scheme within the Defense Ministry. With the possibility of a 15-year prison sentence upon conviction, Ivanov is detained until at least June 23. Despite an appeal for house arrest, he was subsequently dismissed from his position within the ministry.
The scandal deepened as two others, including construction company owner Alexander Fomin and businessman Sergey Borodin, were also detained on related suspicions. Ivanov, a key figure in Russia’s strategy in Ukraine and a close ally of Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, faces scrutiny that may reverberate through the ministry’s hierarchy. His arrest could intensify pressure on Shoigu, who has faced criticism over his handling of the Ukraine conflict.
According to Russian investigative journalist Andrey Soldatov, Ivanov’s arrest aligns with a strategy employed by Russia’s security service, the FSB, to clamp down on misconduct within organizations. Ivanov’s role in the reconstruction of Mariupol, a city devastated by Russian forces during the conflict, adds a layer of significance to his alleged misconduct.
Meanwhile, Ivanov’s opulent lifestyle has drawn attention, with allegations of corruption funding assets like a historic Moscow residence. Despite sanctions from the EU and US following Russia’s Ukraine invasion, Ivanov’s ex-wife, Svetlana Maniovich, continues to live luxuriously in Europe, seemingly untouched by the scandal surrounding her former husband.
