Journalists, bloggers, and influencers from Sierra Leone recently took part in a training program focused on advanced fact-checking techniques, aimed at combating misinformation and hate speech. The event, held at the Family Kingdom Resort in Aberdeen, Freetown, from September 19 to 22, 2024, was supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and its partners.
The iVerify Specialist at UNDP Sierra Leone highlighted the ongoing challenge of misinformation even after the elections, emphasizing the importance of the media literacy program. “This training equips journalists and social media influencers with the skills to fact-check and share accurate information, fostering a more informed and resilient society in Sierra Leone,” they said.
Participants were trained in various techniques, including debunking fake identities, using photo forensics in the age of AI, exploring non-standard fact-checking methods, and employing domain tools for media reporting verification. The first session was led by a Serbian expert in fact-checking.
Edward Kargbo, Head of BBC Media Action in Sierra Leone and Ethiopia, thanked the donors for their support and urged participants to apply the skills learned, noting the significant impact it would have on their professional growth.
