A Tunisian presidential candidate, Ayachi Zammel, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison on fraud charges, which his attorney claims are politically motivated. Zammel, who leads the Azimoun party, was convicted of falsifying signatures required for his candidacy. Despite being imprisoned, he plans to campaign from behind bars and maintain his challenge against President Kais Saied in the upcoming October 6 election.

Zammel faces over 20 charges in jurisdictions across Tunisia, with four additional cases set for hearings this Thursday. His attorney, Abdessattar Messaoudi, said the ruling was anticipated due to ongoing harassment since Zammel announced his candidacy. “This is no surprise. We expected such a ruling given the harassment he has been subjected to,” Messaoudi stated.

This development is part of a broader crackdown on political opponents of President Saied, whose critics argue he is undermining Tunisia’s democratic process. Last month, two other candidates, Nizar Chaari and Karim Gharbi, were sentenced on similar charges of falsifying signatures. Courts also ordered Tunisia’s election authority to reinstate three previously disqualified candidates, one of whom, Abdellatif El Mekki, was arrested on charges linked to a 2014 murder investigation, which many view as politically driven.

The crackdown has drawn widespread criticism from human rights organizations. Amnesty International described the situation as “a clear pre-election assault on the pillars of human rights and the rule of law.” Saied’s most vocal critics, Abir Moussi of the Free Destourian Party and Rached Ghannouchi of the Islamist Ennahda party, have also been imprisoned since last year, signaling an escalating crackdown on dissent in the lead-up to the election. Civil liberties advocates warn that these actions indicate a troubling democratic backslide for the North African nation.
