The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), in collaboration with the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and supported by Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the World Bank, Irish Aid, the EU, and others, has concluded a five-day Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop for Primary One teachers. The event, part of the Literacy for All Sierra Leone Free Education Project, was held at Ansarul Islamic Secondary School, Kenema, focusing on educators from Kenema, Kono, and Kailahun districts.
The training aimed to equip teachers with effective techniques for teaching oral language, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. Teachers learned methods such as phonics and the “I DO, WE DO, YOU DO” approach, emphasizing active student participation and corrective feedback.
Tamba Sivico Bockarie, Deputy Director of TSC in Kenema, underscored the importance of these skills in addressing learning gaps and supporting all pupils, including those with disabilities and those entering formal education for the first time.
By strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills, the initiative seeks to ensure Primary One teachers can foster a love for learning among young pupils and set them on a path for academic success.
