During his ongoing tour of the northern region to support the Feed Salone initiative, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Musa Henry Kpaka emphasized the significance of Leecon Hatchery Company in Makeni. The hatchery plays a crucial role in boosting domestic chick production, with a weekly output of 10,000 day-old chicks, amounting to nearly 5 million chicks annually. These chicks are sold at a considerably lower price (NLe 18.5 per chick) compared to imported alternatives.
Minister Kpaka’s visit included participation in rice planting activities, where he encouraged farmers across the northern region and the entire country to engage in similar efforts.
“We have ploughed over 10,000 hectares of land nationwide, with substantial contributions from private farmers and NGOs,” the Minister stated. “My presence here underscores the importance of using viable seeds on these fields.”
Minister Kpaka reiterated his commitment to enhancing agricultural production, a key component of President Bio’s Feed Salone initiative. He highlighted the vast agricultural potential of Sierra Leone and the collective effort required for success. “Everyone has a role to play,” Minister Kpaka remarked. “Sierra Leone has an abundance of land that can be cultivated for agricultural purposes.”
He concluded his address by urging all Sierra Leoneans to embrace agriculture and contribute to the country’s agricultural revolution.
