From November 25 to December 10, the global community observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), a campaign to mobilize action against violence targeting women and girls. This year’s theme, “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” served as the backdrop for an impactful event in Moyamba, Sierra Leone.
The Initiative for Young Women and Girls with Disability (IYWGD), in collaboration with the Gender Awareness Program (GAP) and supported by Purposeful International, held a campaign calling on government and stakeholders to address Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). National Coordinator Maseray Brima Lavali stressed the need to include women with disabilities in the fight against GBV, advocating for their rights and safety.
Madam Lavali emphasized the inadequacy of current protections for women and girls, urging Sierra Leone’s government to implement more proactive measures. Speaking to students, she highlighted the importance of rejecting violence and respecting laws that safeguard citizens. “We must work together to protect, not harm, one another,” she said.
Juliana Tommy, Program Coordinator for GAP, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to combating SGBV. She called on the community to unite against violence and take responsibility for fostering safer environments.
Despite challenges, IYWGD and GAP remain resolute in their mission to eliminate gender-based violence and ensure a brighter, violence-free future for women and girls in Sierra Leone and beyond.
