A delegation from INTERPOL, led by Theos Badege, Assistant Director Pro Tempore for Africa, held discussions with Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, on strategies to tackle environmental crime and boost police collaboration. The meeting, held on November 18, 2024, at the IGP’s office in Freetown, focused on enhancing law enforcement capabilities and reviewing the performance of the National Central Bureau (NCB).
Badege emphasized the critical role of local police leadership in leveraging INTERPOL’s global network, which spans 196 member countries. Key objectives included assessing the use of INTERPOL’s I-247 system, ensuring compliance with international standards, and strengthening communication within the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and with international counterparts.
IGP Sellu expressed gratitude for INTERPOL’s support, citing investments in training and systems like the West African Police Information System (WAPIS), which has improved operational efficiency. He also outlined plans to expand police coverage at strategic border points and seaports to combat environmental crimes such as illegal logging and wildlife trafficking.
The meeting highlighted the importance of continued international cooperation, training, and resource allocation to address evolving environmental threats. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s law enforcement capabilities and their shared fight against environmental crime.
