Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi urged the international community to impose sanctions on Rwanda during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. He accused Rwanda of “destabilizing” the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through its support for the M23 rebel group, which has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, displacing over 7 million people.

Tshisekedi highlighted that UN experts estimate there are between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops operating in Congo alongside M23 rebels, who have been in conflict with Congolese forces for a decade. He called on the UN to enhance efforts to implement the recommendations of the global coalition against the Islamic State, emphasizing the increasing threat of terrorism in Africa.
