The Sierra Leone Police have confirmed the arrest of Memunatu Bangura and Aminata Kargbo for possession of cartons of free healthcare drugs with altered expiration dates. Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Kugba Allieu, leading the Trans National Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), disclosed this information during a press conference at George Street in Freetown.
The arrests were made on June 27th, 2024, as part of a joint operation between the Sierra Leone Police and the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone at No. 7 Prince Street in Waterloo, conducted by SLP Kissy Division and the Pharmacy Board. The operation uncovered various medications at the suspects’ residence.
Superintendent Allieu explained that Memunatu Bangura claimed ignorance about the drugs’ altered expiration dates, stating she received them from an unnamed woman and unsuccessfully attempted to return them. Conversely, Aminata Kargbo asserted her innocence, clarifying she was merely visiting the residence at the time of the arrest.
The seized drugs, a substantial quantity, are now in the custody of the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone. Despite appeals for leniency, Superintendent Allieu emphasized the necessity for a thorough investigation and assured the public of subsequent legal actions against the suspects.
This joint operation underscores ongoing efforts to combat the circulation of expired and tampered medical supplies, reinforcing public health safeguards across Sierra Leone.
