The late Bishop Emeritus George Biguzzi was laid to rest in Makeni on Monday, 15th July 2024.
This solemn occasion marked a day of mourning for the former spiritual leader of the Catholic Diocese of Makeni. Bishop Biguzzi’s wish to be buried in Makeni was fulfilled, honoring his desire expressed during his lifetime.
Before the burial, his body was taken to the Bombali District Council’s compound, where the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Amb. John Sylvanus Tamba Lamina, Paramount Chiefs, and other local authorities paid tribute. The Mayor of Makeni City Council, Mayor Kamara, announced plans to name a street after Bishop Biguzzi to honor his memory, highlighting his lasting impact on the community.
Bishop Biguzzi dedicated many decades of his life to serving the Catholic Church and the local community in northern Sierra Leone. His legacy extends beyond his religious duties; he played a crucial role in ending Sierra Leone’s civil war by participating in peace negotiations with rebels in Togo. His efforts in peace and reconciliation are a testament to his enduring influence.
Additionally, Bishop Biguzzi was instrumental in establishing the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), the first university in northern Sierra Leone, furthering the region’s educational and social development.
Serving as the second Bishop of Makeni Diocese from 6th January 1987 to 7th January 2012, Bishop Biguzzi’s 25 years of leadership left a profound impact. The Catholic community and the people of Sierra Leone mourn the loss of a devoted servant and a champion for peace and education, whose contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
