President Joe Biden has announced plans to implement significant restrictions on asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border, aiming to address immigration concerns ahead of November’s elections.
The newly revealed presidential proclamation will deny asylum to migrants when officials determine that the southern border is overwhelmed.
Facing the fallout of a failed bipartisan border security deal in Congress and opposition from most Republican lawmakers, Biden opted for executive action, citing the necessity to ‘gain control of the border.’ He expressed a preference for legislative solutions but deemed unilateral action necessary due to Republican obstruction.
Biden accused former President Donald Trump of politicizing immigration, stating that Trump used the issue to attack him rather than seeking solutions. Trump, in response, criticized Biden’s approach via social media, alleging a failure to secure the southern border.
The proclamation will be triggered when border encounters reach 2,500 per day, a threshold expected to be met immediately given current averages. The restrictions will remain in place until encounters fall below 1,500 per day over a two-week period.
Despite increased enforcement efforts with Mexico, Homeland Security warns that smuggling networks remain adaptable, potentially leading to a surge in illegal crossings.
