Social media erupted with frustration, with one citizen lamenting, “They ask us to tighten our belts while he splurges on a jet.” Another criticized the president’s disconnect from the people’s suffering.
Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili condemned the purchase as a sign of “fiscal recklessness and dishonesty.” Despite these concerns, a presidential spokesperson defended the decision, claiming it was made on the Senate’s security committee’s advice and that the jet was bought at a bargain price.
Nigeria is currently grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, blamed on government policies that have pushed inflation to a 28-year high of 34.19%, while the naira continues to fall against the dollar. With 63% of the population living in poverty, the sense of disillusionment is deepening.
