At least five people have been killed and three injured in protests across Mozambique, including in Maputo, Nampula, and Zambezia, police reported. Clashes erupted as protesters armed with stones, knives, and machetes confronted police, said Orlando Mudumane, police spokesman.
The unrest follows defeated presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane’s claims of election fraud in the October 9 polls. Declaring himself the winner, Mondlane, speaking from South Africa, called for a week-long nationwide protest from December 4–11, targeting roads, railways, ports, and airports.
President Filipe Nyusi warned the unrest might delay public sector salary payments, affecting teachers and nurses, as external financial support remains absent.
In Matola, protests escalated after a 13-year-old was fatally shot by a plainclothes officer. Demonstrators blocked access to the Beleluane Industrial Park, disrupting operations at Mozal, a major aluminum exporter. Truck movements were temporarily halted.
