Over twenty media professionals and Mass Communication students from the University of Makeni have committed to enhancing their coverage of transitional justice issues in Sierra Leone. This pledge follows a training session organized by the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) Sierra Leone, supported by the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF). The initiative aims to reshape narratives on transitional justice over the next 11 months.

Held at the Where-Else venue on the Makeni-Kabala highway, the training featured presentations by experts Francis Sowa, Ph.D., and Paul Kamara. They highlighted the media’s critical role in promoting transitional justice and shared strategies for integrating these topics into daily reporting.

Participants engaged in group discussions to identify key challenges in Sierra Leone’s transitional justice landscape and brainstormed ways to address them. The trainers emphasized the importance of proactive reporting to prevent a recurrence of past conflicts, urging attendees to incorporate the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) into their work.

Expressing gratitude for the initiative, participants commended MRCG for empowering journalists through the program titled “Engaging the Media and Communities to Change the Narratives of Transitional Justice Issues in Sierra Leone.” This commitment is a significant step toward fostering informed and responsible media coverage in the region.
