UNICEF and the Government of Iceland have launched the second phase of a $6.4 million Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative to enhance climate-resilient WASH services in Sierra Leone’s coastal and rural fishing communities.
Key Objectives:
- Improved WASH Access: 55,363 people, including 8,422 school children, will gain access to safe water and sanitation in 17 communities.
- Health and Education: Healthcare facilities and 20 schools will receive upgraded WASH systems, benefiting children and promoting menstrual health for 5,710 adolescent girls.
- Livelihoods and Early Learning: Fisherfolk will access hygienic fish processing facilities, while 1,120 young children will benefit from Early Childhood Development centers.
The partnership, established in 2019, has already impacted over 50,000 people through initiatives like solar-powered water systems and improved sanitation. This second phase will continue to advance Sierra Leone’s progress toward sustainable development and healthier lives for its citizens.
