Sherbro Alliance Partners (SAP), the visionary team behind the Sherbro Island City project in Sierra Leone, recently convened with nine senior executives from leading private firms linked to the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI). This meeting, hosted by Lloyd’s, aimed to explore collaboration and investment opportunities to advance the sustainable development of Sherbro Island.
The Sustainable Markets Initiative was established by His Majesty King Charles III in 2020 during his tenure as Prince of Wales at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos. The SMI serves as a global private sector coalition dedicated to driving the transition towards sustainability by bringing together industry leaders, financial institutions, and government officials. It plays a critical role in fostering innovation and promoting a just, sustainable, and prosperous future.
During the meeting, international experts and prominent business figures discussed the Sherbro Island City project, focusing on how corporate partnerships could support SAP’s development plans. The goal is to build a modern, eco-friendly city that offers safety, diversity, and tourist appeal, along with a state-of-the-art financial center, benefiting Sherbro Islanders, Sierra Leoneans, the diaspora, and global citizens.
Idris Elba and Siaka Stevens, co-founders of SAP, reaffirmed their commitment to Sierra Leone’s development through the transformation of Sherbro Island. They highlighted the immense scale of the project and the need for collaborative efforts. By partnering with industry giants such as Octopus Energy and Lloyd’s and engaging with potential collaborators within the SMI, SAP aims to adopt and implement best practices from globally recognized entities.
The meeting included representatives from Africa investor Group, Aon, AstraZeneca, Bank of America, Barclays, Lloyd’s, Octopus Energy, Standard Chartered, and Tokio Marine Kiln. According to Elba and Stevens, these collaborations are crucial for realizing the long-term vision of Sherbro Island and fostering sustainable development that brings tangible benefits to the people of Sierra Leone and the broader African continent.
Founded in 2019 by Idris Elba and Siaka Stevens, Sherbro Alliance Partners is dedicated to pioneering the Sherbro Island City project. SAP envisions creating the world’s first African Dynamic Eco-City, a secure, diverse, and sustainable hub for business, education, energy, agriculture, entertainment, and tourism.
