The Save Africa from Malaria Infection (SAFMI) Foundation, led by Executive Director Artem Volchenko, launched a major initiative to combat malaria in Freetown by distributing over 100 artificial fish ponds to hospitals and communities. The event, held on August 20, 2024, was warmly received by community stakeholders and local health centers.

SAFMI’s team, coordinated by Alhaji Dauda Musa Bangura and Board Member Vitali Ginsburg, installed water tanks containing Gambusia Affinis, mosquito-eating fish that effectively control mosquito larvae. Bangura emphasized that the initiative not only reduces mosquito populations but also educates communities on malaria prevention. The fish, capable of consuming up to 300 larvae in minutes, provide a sustainable solution to malaria control.

This project highlights SAFMI’s commitment to environmental sustainability and public health, with plans to expand to other regions. SAFMI also trained volunteers to manage the fish ponds and ensure long-term benefits. Health officers in the affected communities expressed deep gratitude for the initiative, recognizing it as a vital intervention in the ongoing fight against malaria, a leading cause of illness and death in Africa.
