During Monday evening’s match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United, Premier League referee Jarred Gillett will debut a head-mounted video camera, dubbed the ‘RefCam’. Although not broadcast live, the footage will be utilised for a special program offering insights into Premier League officiating. This marks the first time a referee in the league will wear such a device. The initiative follows Bundesliga referee Daniel Schlager’s use of a similar setup during a 2-2 draw between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg, captured for the ‘Referees Mic’d up – Bundesliga’ program. Premier League referee Rob Jones previously wore a camera during a 2023 Summer Series match between Chelsea and Brighton in Philadelphia. Additionally, last year, the Football Association trialed bodycams in adult grassroots football to combat abuse towards officials.
