Hon. Sengu Mohamed Koroma has been elected Vice President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, succeeding Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara. Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves of Cape Verde was also named President, replacing Justice Edward Amoako Asante after six years of service. Both were sworn in on October 6, 2022, in Guinea-Bissau.

This leadership change follows the recent loss of Justices Kekura Bangura and Januaria Tavares Silva Moreira Costa. In his inaugural address, President Gonçalves emphasized responsibility and dialogue as key pillars of his leadership. He pledged to strengthen the court’s independence, engage with member states and civil society, and enhance operational efficiency.

The court is undergoing revitalization as it tackles challenges such as accessibility and resource constraints. With the new leadership, there is optimism for improved access to justice across West Africa.
