Wayne Mitchel, the IMF Resident Representative in Sierra Leone, stressed the urgent need for practical steps to tackle the country’s economic issues, urging a move beyond data collection. Speaking at a World Bank panel discussion, Mitchel praised the openness of the dialogue and emphasized the importance of transparency for driving reforms that could support startups and business growth.
He called for regular conversations to assess reforms and engage stakeholders, noting that public institutions must address demographic challenges while fostering a business-friendly environment. Mitchel urged these institutions to implement actionable measures that go beyond gathering data, focusing on development efforts that engage the private sector and unlock economic opportunities.
World Bank country manager, Abdu Muwonge, echoed Mitchel’s remarks, highlighting the significance of the Economic Update and its role in improving governance. Muwonge emphasized the need for accessible public information and the responsibility of institutions, such as the National Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Finance, to enhance civic awareness. He also discussed plans to expand solar energy access in Sierra Leone, with projects expected to generate significant power within 18 months.
Both Mitchel and Muwonge stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue, with Muwonge noting that next year’s discussions will focus on water security as a key issue for sustainable development.
