Iceland’s Head of Mission, Ásdís Bjarnadóttir, alongside World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director, Yvonne Forsen, visited Bonthe Island from November 18 to 20, 2024, to monitor the implementation of the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) initiative. Funded by Iceland’s $2.4 million donation, the programme provides nutritious meals to over 40,000 schoolchildren across 184 public schools in Bonthe District.
Ásdís Bjarnadóttir toured FAWE Primary School and visited remote coastal communities, including Delken and Jamaica, where she observed the school feeding programme and its agricultural initiatives, such as orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) gardens. The programme supports 1,740 women and youth farmers, providing training and market opportunities to promote sustainable agriculture.
This initiative is part of Iceland and WFP’s commitment to improving education and food security in Sierra Leone, aligning with the government’s National School Feeding Policy. The partnership empowers local communities, linking education with agricultural development for long-term growth.
