Haiti’s new interim Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, was sworn in on Monday amid escalating violence in Port-au-Prince. Shortly after his inauguration, gunfire erupted at Toussaint Louverture International Airport as gangs targeted a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale. A flight attendant was injured, but the plane was diverted to the Dominican Republic for safety. Some airlines have suspended operations due to security concerns.
During his swearing-in, Fils-Aimé emphasized the urgent need to restore security, ensure food security, and guarantee freedom of movement across Haiti. His appointment comes at a difficult time for the country, with allegations of corruption complicating efforts to stabilize the transitional government. Fils-Aimé, a businessman and former Chamber of Commerce president, previously campaigned for the Senate in 2015 and studied at Boston University.
