Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Chairman of Sierra Leone’s Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, recently emphasized the government’s dedication to lowering energy costs for citizens. During discussions with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Dr. Yumkella highlighted efforts to leverage cost-effective energy sources and reduce tariffs. Their conversation took place at the Newton solar park in the Western Area Rural District, a project funded by IRENA.
Dr. Yumkella noted that Sierra Leone currently benefits from the economical Bumbuna Hydro Dam in Tonkolili District and the Dodo Hydro Dam in Kenema District, where electricity costs between 3-5 cents per kilowatt-hour. He also mentioned plans to explore biomass energy from agricultural and mining waste, such as from the SOCFIN Agricultural Project in Pujehun and mining operations in Tonkolili District, to further expand energy options.
Highlighting Sierra Leone’s renewable energy potential, Dr. Yumkella stated the country could generate between 150-200 megawatts of electricity, emphasizing the importance of clean energy for sustainable development. He also discussed opportunities for hydroelectric projects using the country’s abundant rivers and rainfall, alongside plans to train locals in solar panel maintenance.
Deputy Minister of Energy I, Dr. Eldred Taylor, provided insights into the operational Newton solar park, which has been generating 4.9 megawatts of electricity since 2021. Supported by IRENA and spanning 10 acres with an additional 220 acres secured for future expansion, the park serves as a cornerstone for Sierra Leone’s renewable energy strategy.
Francesco La Camera expressed satisfaction with IRENA’s investment impact in Sierra Leone, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to enhancing the country’s renewable energy infrastructure through continued collaboration. This partnership underscores Sierra Leone’s strategic efforts towards sustainable development and energy self-sufficiency, aiming to provide affordable and reliable energy solutions for its population.
