Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attended his first BRICS Summit as a member on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a bilateral discussion.
Putin praised Ethiopia’s inclusion in BRICS as an “important step,” noting the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two nations, which date back over a century. “Our countries’ positions on many global and regional issues align closely. We value Ethiopia’s support for most Russian initiatives in the United Nations,” he stated.
During the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Abiy Ahmed emphasized the need for stronger intra-BRICS trade and investment, presenting Ethiopia as the third-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ethiopia officially joined BRICS earlier this year, making it one of the newest members of the group. The BRICS nations are committed to realizing a multipolar world and amplifying the voices of the Global South, with some members positioning the bloc as a counterbalance to the Western-dominated world order.
