In a groundbreaking development within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Memounatou Ibrahima has made history by becoming the first female Speaker in the regional legislative body’s existence. This momentous occasion unfolded during the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session of the Sixth Legislature held in Kano.

Ibrahima’s election to the speakership marks a significant stride in ECOWAS’s pursuit of gender equality and empowerment. Guided by the rotational principle outlined in the Supplementary Act on Enhancement of Power, her selection aligns with the alphabetical rotation of speakership among member states. Notably, the previous term saw Sierra Leone hold the position.

Bringing a wealth of parliamentary experience, Ibrahima served as the third Deputy Speaker in the fifth Legislature. Since 2021, she has been actively engaged in ECOWAS parliamentary affairs, contributing to regional deliberations and initiatives.

Her ascent to the speakership follows the temporary tenure of Senator Barau Jubrin from Nigeria, who stepped in as Acting Speaker during the inauguration of the Sixth Legislature in April 2024 to prevent a leadership vacuum.

Despite the absence of the Togolese delegation, owing to pending elections in their country, Ibrahima’s unanimous endorsement by her parliamentary peers led to her uncontested election.

In a symbolic gesture, Acting Speaker Senator Barau Jubrin officially passed the instrument of authority, the gavel, to Ibrahima, marking the commencement of her tenure as Speaker.
