The Brazil G20 Social Summit, a landmark parallel event to the G20 leaders’ summit, began in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, emphasizing civil society’s pivotal role in global discussions. Organized by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the summit highlights the Global South, with African nations playing a key part through the African Union’s G20 membership.

First Lady Rosângela da Silva praised the unprecedented influence of civil society at this summit, noting the significant engagement of groups across the globe. Running from November 14 to 16, 2024, the event has drawn around 40,000 participants, including activists, policymakers, and grassroots leaders, gathered in Rio’s port district and the Museum of Tomorrow.

The summit addresses global challenges such as hunger, inequality, climate change, and governance reform, with a special focus on Africa’s needs, including debt relief and sustainable development. Proposals from the event will be presented at the G20 leaders’ summit on November 18–19, reflecting Brazil’s drive for inclusive dialogue and collaborative solutions to global issues.
