Elected, accused of corruption; fired, accused of rape; acquitted, elected president, accused of corruption again, denied again, ousted, imprisoned for contempt of court, freed, barred from becoming an MP – these are just some of the tumultuous chapters in the saga of South Africa’s Jacob Zuma.

Despite facing numerous scandals and legal battles, Zuma, like a resilient prize-fighter, has never been knocked out. His recent emergence as the leader of a new party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), has shaken the political landscape of South Africa.

The recent election results reflect his enduring influence, with MK gaining 15% of the vote and dealing a humiliating blow to the African National Congress (ANC), the party Zuma once led.

In his heartland of KwaZulu-Natal province, Zuma’s charismatic appeal remains strong, rooted in his cultural and traditional Zulu beliefs and his reputation as a peace broker during times of political violence.

Despite facing corruption allegations and a stint in prison for contempt of court, Zuma continues to connect with the poor and marginalized, a testament to his political prowess.

His journey from anti-apartheid activist to president to political pariah and back again showcases his remarkable ability to defy the odds and remain a formidable force in South African politics.
