Health authorities in Sierra Leone have confirmed that all 290 individuals linked to a suspected Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) case in Kono District have completed their 21-day observation period without showing symptoms.

The monitored group included healthcare workers, family members, and community members, supervised by the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) under strict protocols. Contacts in the Western Area, also under surveillance, have completed 11 symptom-free days and will continue observation until their 21-day period ends.

Health Minister Austin Demby expressed relief at the outcome but emphasized the need for vigilance. “This reminds us to stay proactive in strengthening public health surveillance and response systems,” he said.

Brigadier General Prof. Foday Sahr, NPHA’s Executive Director, highlighted the importance of such monitoring. “This case underscores the unpredictable nature of health threats. Our systems allowed us to respond effectively,” he noted.

Key measures included:

  • Risk-based contact identification
  • Daily symptom checks
  • Coordination with district health teams

Officials praised community cooperation and urged citizens to report unusual symptoms via the 117 hotline and rely on verified information.

While this case did not escalate into a VHF outbreak, it highlights the need for sustained readiness to tackle potential health emergencies in Sierra Leone.
