The National Commission for Persons with Disability recently introduced SLUDI’s new executive members to the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty.
An election held on June 2nd brought the new executive into office. During the official presentation, the chairperson emphasized the fairness of the election and noted that the executive was democratically elected. Dr. Konneh mentioned that the new executive had already paid a courtesy call on him but stressed the importance of receiving the minister’s endorsement.
Dr. Konneh highlighted the government’s commitment to disability issues, pointing to the recent election and other initiatives. He congratulated the new executive and assured them of his commission’s support. He encouraged the executive to unite the union members and focus on development.
Joseph Alieu, the newly elected president of SLUDI, expressed gratitude to the government and the Minister of Social Welfare for enabling a free and fair election. He emphasized the need for unity and collaboration to advance the interests of disabled people. Mr. Alieu called for an open-door policy with the ministry and requested office space and support to address disability policy issues. He reaffirmed their determination to work with the government and other stakeholders.
Minister Melrose Karminty congratulated the new executive and praised the gender balance within the group. She expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the process and emphasized her commitment to supporting persons with disabilities and the nation. The minister also commended the National Commission for Persons with Disability for their dedication. She highlighted her efforts to understand her mandate and work with her team to deliver results for the people of Sierra Leone, including those with disabilities.
