Hadeel Abdelnasir, a mother of three, fled her home in eastern Al-Jazirah two weeks ago as violence erupted in her village. Now in Port Sudan, she recalls the horrors: “The RSF (Rapid Support Forces) are killing everyone—women, children, men, and the elderly. People are paying huge ransoms to escape.”
The violence in Al-Jazirah has intensified as part of Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Army and the RSF. Rashida Yousif, another displaced mother in Port Sudan, shared her terrifying experience: “One family was tortured, a woman was raped in front of her husband, and some of my relatives were poisoned.”
The escalation follows the defection of an RSF commander to the Sudanese Army, leading to more brutal attacks. According to the Al-Jazirah Conference Group, over 500 villages have been evacuated, leaving tens of thousands displaced.
“Since the defection, the RSF has killed hundreds and besieged many villages,” said independent analyst Abdulmoniem Abu-Idrees, urging urgent intervention to prevent further ethnic tensions.
Despite international calls for peace, a UN Security Council resolution to protect civilians was vetoed by Russia, leaving little hope for immediate action. The conflict continues to devastate civilians, exposing them to violence, torture, and sexual abuse.
“Families in Port Sudan are desperate,” said journalist Naba Mohideen. “There is no end to the violence in sight.”
