Madam Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, announced that international flights to Sierra Leone will rise to 50 by October. Speaking at the weekly government press briefing on September 17, 2024, she highlighted significant progress in attracting airlines during her tenure.
When she took office, Sierra Leone had 37 weekly flights. Thanks to efforts, including the introduction of Ethiopian Airlines, the frequency has now reached 47. Brussels Airlines is set to increase its flights from three to five times a week, contributing to the upcoming milestone.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing with two airlines for direct routes to Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and more, addressing regional connectivity challenges. Currently, traveling to Liberia requires long transit times through Accra and Lome.
With December’s peak travel season approaching, Madam Barrie is optimistic about securing charter flights from London to Freetown in the coming months.
