Sierra Leone is poised to take the helm of the United Nations Security Council in August 2024, as announced by President Julius Maada Bio during a Town Hall meeting at the Freetown Bintumani Conference Centre. This significant leadership role marks the second time Sierra Leone has achieved such a milestone, with the first occurrence being over fifty-three years ago.

President Bio attributed Sierra Leone’s selection to the support of 188 African countries, highlighting their confidence in the nation’s developmental trajectory. He emphasized that the upcoming Security Council session is pivotal, as Sierra Leone will preside over discussions on global peace and security. Key issues will include the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Israel, the situation in Ukraine and Russia, and critical matters affecting the African continent, which has a population of 1.2 billion.

“I will be chairing the UN Security Council throughout August,” President Bio affirmed. He stressed the importance of this opportunity for Sierra Leone and the impact it will have on his administration’s legacy.

The forthcoming session is expected to be a landmark event in Sierra Leone’s history, showcasing its diplomatic influence and commitment to international cooperation. By 2028, this role is anticipated to highlight Sierra Leone’s growing stature on the global stage.

President Bio also reiterated his government’s dedication to inclusivity, particularly in involving women and youth in all aspects of governance and national development initiatives. This commitment reflects Sierra Leone’s proactive stance on social equity and its active participation in global affairs.

As preparations intensify for its leadership role at the United Nations Security Council, Sierra Leone looks forward to making significant contributions to global peace and stability, underlining its emerging prominence in international diplomacy.
