Sierra Leone Aquatics has once again made history by becoming the first National Sports Federation to qualify athletes for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, set to take place from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France. Joshua JJ Wyse, OLY, a well-known figure, and newcomer Olamiday Elizabeth Sam will represent the nation in the prestigious event.
Joshua, currently undergoing rigorous training in Thailand, will mark his second appearance in the Olympics, while Olamiday, based in Sierra Leone, will make her debut on the Olympic stage. Their participation ensures that Sierra Leone’s colors—the Green, White, and Blue—will proudly fly at the swimming venues throughout the competition.
Expressing his joy, Mohamed Turay, President of Sierra Leone Aquatics, commented, “I am delighted that our efforts in training and preparation have borne fruit. This achievement not only showcases our athletes’ dedication but also opens up new opportunities for aquatics sports in our country.”
Sierra Leone’s aquatics athletes have participated in the last two Olympics (2016 and 2020), underscoring the federation’s leadership in presenting qualified athletes among National Sports Federations during these times.
With just a month remaining until the Paris Olympics, Sierra Leone continues to finalize its contingent. Despite efforts in various disciplines, the country may send a maximum of six athletes, reflecting challenges in securing qualifications across all sports.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will feature participants from 206 countries competing in 32 sports and 329 medal events, making it the second-largest event in Olympic history after the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which featured 339 events.
