In a significant move at the United Nations, Sierra Leone voted alongside 124 member states against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The resolution, deemed “historic” by Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour, calls for Israel to end its occupation within 12 months. It passed with 124 votes in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstentions, with three of the four Mano River Union countries supporting it; Liberia abstained, while Malawi voted against.
This vote highlights Sierra Leone’s active role in global diplomacy, especially since it assumed the UN Security Council presidency last August. During this time, Sierra Leone has addressed critical issues, including the Israel-Palestinian conflict and the crises in Sudan and Ukraine. The country’s stance underscores its commitment to international human rights and resolving conflicts through diplomatic means, marking a significant step toward addressing the Israeli occupation and the broader quest for peace in the region.
