Russia has expressed its support for Africa’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. In a statement to Russian media ahead of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov referred to Africa’s aspiration as “legitimate” and also backed the ambitions of India and Brazil.
Lavrov emphasized that Africa’s inclusion in the Security Council would amplify the voices of developing nations, a point frequently highlighted by African leaders.
Recently, the United States indicated its support for Africa’s bid, albeit without the provision of veto power, which has sparked criticism.
In 2005, African leaders reached a consensus on the need for full representation in UN decision-making bodies, particularly the Security Council. However, progress has been hindered by resistance from current permanent members of the Council.
