On World Food Day, President Julius Maada Bio marked the first anniversary of the Feed Salone Project by launching its One-Year Report, showcasing the initiative’s achievements in combating food insecurity in Sierra Leone. The launch took place in Kailahun District, featuring cultural displays and exhibitions of local agricultural products. Farmers proudly displayed their harvests, reflecting progress made under the initiative.
President Bio expressed pride in the project’s success, noting its role in boosting food production and distribution. “Feed Salone was launched to transform our agricultural sector and ensure access to nutritious food for all Sierra Leoneans. A year later, we are making significant strides,” he said. He further emphasized the importance of farming and urged citizens to engage in agriculture to bolster food security.
In support of local farmers, President Bio purchased all crops on display, stressing that farming is vital to the nation’s economy. He called on everyone to contribute to making Sierra Leone self-sufficient in food.
The Feed Salone Project is a key part of the government’s sustainable development agenda, focusing on increasing domestic food production, improving food security, and creating agricultural jobs. The report highlights reductions in rice imports, improved access to agricultural inputs, and enhanced support for rural farmers through technology.
The Minister of Agriculture praised the initiative’s impact, saying, “This project is about building a food-secure Sierra Leone for the future.”
Farmers like Mariama Kamara from Port Loko District shared their experiences, with many reporting increased harvests due to the project’s support.
The World Food Day theme, “Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind,” highlighted the link between food security and sustainable water management. President Bio also called for more efforts to address climate change and ensure access to water resources, critical for agriculture.
As Sierra Leone looks to the future, President Bio reaffirmed his commitment to building a resilient agricultural economy, ensuring food for all citizens. The Feed Salone One-Year Report marks a significant step toward achieving food self-sufficiency.
