A tragic collision between a fuel tanker and another truck in Nigeria on Sunday resulted in a deadly explosion, claiming the lives of over 50 people, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. The incident occurred in the Agaie area of north-central Niger state, where the tanker was also transporting cattle. At least 50 of the animals were burned alive in the explosion.
Initial reports from emergency responders indicated that 30 bodies were recovered from the scene. However, a later statement confirmed that an additional 18 victims, who were burned to death in the collision, had been found. All the deceased were given a mass burial, officials said. Rescue operations are still underway as authorities search for more possible victims.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has called for calm in the affected community and urged drivers to follow traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life. Fatal truck accidents are unfortunately common in Nigeria due to the absence of a reliable railway system, forcing cargo to be transported by road. In 2020 alone, Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps reported 1,531 fuel tanker crashes, resulting in 535 deaths and 1,142 injuries.
