The Monument and Relics Commission recently organized a tour of Freetown’s historic, cultural, and touristic sites for pupils from 10 secondary schools. This initiative was part of June’s Monument and Relics month and the “Tourism for All” campaign, aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for Sierra Leone’s heritage among the younger generation.

The tour was designed not only to expose students to the historical significance of these sites but also to spark their imagination beyond the confines of the classroom. It began at the National Museum, where Education and Outreach Officer Olivette Bernette provided an orientation on Sierra Leone’s national identity, ethnicity, and intangible heritage.

At the Railway Museum, Senior Tour Guide, Mohamed Jabbie elaborated on the history of the railway, highlighting its relevance and showcasing various relics. Bernette continued to lead the students through other significant historic sites, including Old Fourah Bay College, Old Wharf Steps, the Thomas Peters Statue, Saint George Cathedral Church, the Big Market, Maroon Church, and the Cotton Tree.

The pupils were appreciative of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs for organizing this enriching opportunity. They expressed gratitude for the chance to explore these historic landmarks, which not only broadened their understanding of Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage but also deepened their connection to the country’s significant monuments and relics.
