Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby announced a sharp reduction in maternal deaths at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH), dropping from 17 to just 2 in September. The announcement was made during the opening of a new medical equipment and pharmacy block at PCMH on October 15, 2024.
Dr. Demby attributed this success to the Ministry’s focus on quality healthcare and President Bio’s goal of achieving zero maternal deaths. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ending preventable deaths at the facility.
PCMH, now upgraded with new patient monitors, defibrillators, and additional beds, can accommodate more patients. Medical Superintendent Dr. Amadu Sesay highlighted that the hospital, which handles over 14,000 outpatient visits annually, had long struggled with overcrowded spaces, a lack of equipment, and inadequate infrastructure. The new block improves patient privacy and overall care quality.
Minister Demby praised donors like CUAMM for their support, noting PCMH’s crucial role as the busiest healthcare facility in Sierra Leone, with 9,000 births annually. He stressed the importance of both improved facilities and high-quality service from staff, encouraging a positive attitude toward patients.
Don Dante Carraro, Director of CUAMM, emphasized ongoing collaboration to achieve zero preventable maternal deaths, while Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mustapha Kabba recognized CUAMM’s contributions in training and technical assistance. He noted that the upgrades would change public perceptions and boost confidence in the quality of care at PCMH.
