Arab and Islamic leaders have called for suspending Israel’s United Nations membership to increase international pressure over the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. This proposal, highlighted at a Riyadh summit, marks a significant shift in strategy. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit emphasized the importance of this action, calling it a vital step to address longstanding grievances. He expressed confidence that many countries would support the push to freeze Israel’s UN membership, originally granted in 1949 under Resolution 181.

The summit, attended by leaders from across the Arab and Islamic world, aimed to find solutions for de-escalation and peace. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stressed the need for the international community to hold Israel accountable, rejecting any justification for inaction. The summit also called for halting the export of weapons to Israel and endorsed a Turkish-led initiative, supported by 52 nations, to pressure the UN Security Council to end arms transfers to Israel.
