Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will soon introduce new passports, according to a recent announcement by the president of their confederation. In a televised address on September 15, Malian President Col. Assimi Goïta stated that the new passports are designed to harmonize travel documents within the confederation and facilitate global mobility for their citizens.
The cost of the new passports and the details on visa-free countries are yet to be revealed. This announcement comes just before the first anniversary of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), established on September 17, 2023, with the Liptako-Gourma Charter. The AES, formed after the countries withdrew from ECOWAS, emphasizes openness to regional partnerships respecting sovereignty and non-interference.
